NIN REGISTRATION LINKAGE WITH SIM CARD
On NIN registration and SIM card data validation, the Federal Government on the 9th of December 2020, directed the Nigerians Communications Commission (NCC) to embark on another audit of the Subscriber Registration Database.
WHAT IS THE NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER?
The National Identification Number (NIN) is a unique number. It identifies an individual as a Nigerian. And is issued to that person upon enrolment by NIMC (the National Identity Management Commission).
The NIN is used to tie all records about an individual into the National Identity Database. And it is also used as a valid means of establishing or verifying individual identity.
WHY VERIFICATION WITH NIN?
The objective of the audit exercise is to verify and ensure compliance by Mobile Network Operators with the set quality standards. And also consent with requirements of SIM Card Registration as issued by the Ministry and Commission.
WHAT IS THE DURATION FOR NIN VERIFICATION?
The submission of NIN by subscribers was to take place within two weeks from December 16 to 30 2020. But it was on the 12th of December 2020 extended to three (3) weeks from 30th December, 2020 to 19th January, 2021 for subscribers with NIN, and six (6) weeks from 30th December, 2020 to 9th February, 2021, for subscribers without NIN.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER?
All citizens and legal residents in Nigeria, from age zero and above, are eligible to enroll for their NINs. Minors will not be issued National identity Cards until they attain the age of 16.
Individuals must jealously guard and not reveal their NIN registration number to anyone except to relevant authorities on request. It should not also be disclosed online or through any other social media.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I DID NOT REGISTER FOR A NIN OR LINK IT WITH SIM?
The Federal Government on the 21st December 2020 announced the suspension of USSD and verification charges. They also extended the deadline for Subscribers to link their SIM (Subscribers Identification Module) card with their NIN.
Following this cheering news, it is important that those without the NIN number, register now and link it with their sim card before the deadline. This is to avoid being blocked from mobile networks.
